    What we check

The three pillars — and the small print

IR35 status turns on a few key tests: who controls how, when and where you work; whether you could send a substitute; and whether there’s a mutual obligation to offer and accept work. We review your contract against all three, plus the practical clauses — notice periods, equipment, financial risk, exclusivity — that quietly point HMRC one way or the other.

Because your working practices carry as much weight as the paperwork, clients also get a yearly assessment of how they actually operate on engagements — so the reality matches the contract if HMRC ever asks. New to IR35? Start with our plain-English guide: What is IR35?

    IR35 review questions

What does an IR35 contract review cover?
We review your written contract against the key status tests — control, substitution and mutuality of obligation — plus the practical clauses that trip contractors up. You get a clear view of where the contract sits and what to push back on before you sign.
    Is the review really free?
For Juniper Lynx clients, yes — unlimited contract reviews and a yearly assessment of your working practices are included in the monthly fee. Many providers charge per review; we think staying on the right side of IR35 is part of the job.
Do working practices matter more than the contract?
Both matter. HMRC looks at the reality of the engagement, not just the paperwork — so we assess how you actually work, not only what the contract says. Strong paperwork plus matching working practices is the best defence. Try our 5 IR35 questions to ask yourself.
    Who decides my IR35 status?
For most private-sector engagements with medium or large clients, the client determines status and gives you a Status Determination Statement. For small clients and direct engagements, responsibility stays with your company — which is exactly when a proper review matters most.
What if my contract is caught inside IR35?
Inside-IR35 work isn’t the end of the world — we’ll explain what it means for your take-home, how the deemed payment works, and whether the engagement is still worth it. Plenty of our clients mix inside and outside contracts.
